The HSUS Strategy for Success
By Wayne Pacelle
When you are the largest and most accomplished organization in the animal protection movement, it’s logical that you’ll be feared by groups or corporations that stand in the way of progress. They typically don’t argue on the merits of the issues, but instead try to divert attention and reframe the debate. That’s the case with their rejoinders to The HSUS, which is the object of sustained attacks, caricatures, and mischaracterizations by people who inhabit the domains of cockfighting, puppy mills, horse slaughter, trophy hunting, trapping, fur fashion, animal agribusiness, commercial whaling, and other animal exploitation industries. Survey the leadership of any of these economic interests, ask them which group they fear most, and you’ll get these four letters: HSUS. If you doubt that, simply read their blogs or trade publications, and the conclusion is inescapable.
They’d ignore us if they thought we were naïve or silly. But the fact is, they fear us because we are effective, we drive public opinion, and we won’t accept their adherence to their present conduct or economic formulas. Read More
It’s interesting that Pacelle admits to everyone in his blog post that HSUS categorizes hunting, trapping, and animal agriculture as animal exploitation. Since the TV station in Atlanta ran a piece exposing HSUS for the animal rights lobbying group that they are, Pacelle has been on the defensive. It’s probably the first time we have seen this organization rocked back on their heels just a bit. You can also tell from the tone of Pacelle’s writings since then that they do not handle criticism well and will do anything to silence it. On Twitter, they have blocked anyone who questions them from following the group. They unleashed their attack dogs on the TV station that ran the anti-HSUS piece and got it pulled from the internet. Google even removed the cached version of it. At least Pacelle finally admits that HSUS is attacking family farmers that raise livestock.

Like the true bullies they are..."either agree with us or we will come after you"
Dog breeders are in the same boat as ag.."exploiters". It is time for all animal owners/breeders/ag folk to unite and take this bully out once and for all.
Great blog and keep up the good work.
You haven't seen nothing yet. The people who are pulling HSUS strings (Steve Best for one) also want all corporations to be shut down. They want all inheritance to cease. They want all industry to be stopped. This is just the tip of a very big iceburg.
Also Mr. Pacelle said they HSUS never hided the fact that they had nothing to do with local shelters - he takes pride in being a political lobby organisation. He fail, however, to answer why such a little money went to the animals after the Hurricane i Louisiana
I believe H$U$ is the most dangerous entity in the US right now and I agree with the Endangered Owner, we need to join forces to strike back. Livestock farmers, fur farmers, researchers, animal trainers, pet owners and more. Together we could be far more powerful than the AR movement if only we weren't all so busy minding our own business and getting on with our lives.
Please read any book on the history of animal rights. One will realize quickly that HSUS has a goal of ending animal ownership, this means all animals. PETA and HSUS have the same goals. Are you not surprized they are vegeterians? These are the people pushing laws that effect you.
In their own words this is animal rights:
The Six Principles of the Animal Rights Position
1. The animal rights position maintains that all sentient beings, humans or nonhumans, have one right: the basic right not to be treated as the property of others.
2. Our recognition of the one basic right means that we must abolish, and not merely regulate, institutionalized animal exploitation—because it assumes that animals are the property of humans.
3. Just as we reject racism, sexism, ageism, and heterosexism, we reject speciesism. The species of a sentient being is no more reason to deny the protection of this basic right than race, sex, age, or sexual orientation is a reason to deny membership in the human moral community to other humans.
4. We recognize that we will not abolish overnight the property status of nonhumans, but we will support only those campaigns and positions that explicitly promote the abolitionist agenda. We will not support positions that call for supposedly “improved” regulation of animal exploitation. We reject any campaign that promotes sexism, racism, heterosexism or other forms of discrimination against humans.
5. We recognize that the most important step that any of us can take toward abolition is to adopt the vegan lifestyle and to educate others about veganism. Veganism is the principle of abolition applied to one’s personal life and the consumption of any meat, fowl, fish, or dairy product, or the wearing or use of animal products, is inconsistent with the abolitionist perspective.
6. We recognize the principle of nonviolence as the guiding principle of the animal rights movement.
